Sgt. Jayton Daniel Patterson was born on August 9, 1978, in Sedley, Virginia, the firstborn of Frank and Sharon Patterson.
He was a loving brother to Mattie and Hunter and grew up in the outdoors and on the field, hunting, fishing, and playing baseball, football, and basketball. Faith anchored his life. As an active member of Millfield Baptist Church, he was known as a soldier of God long before he wore his country's uniform.
After graduating from Tidewater Academy and attending college, Jayton enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1999 and reenlisted in 2003. He trained at Parris Island, then served on the White House Security Detail in Washington, D.C., stationed at Marine Barracks 8th & I, where he marched in the Evening Parades and supported presidential duties in the years after September 11. On February 15, 2003, he married the love of his life, Stephanie, and that October, they welcomed their daughter, Claire.
In August 2003, Jayton reported to Camp Lejeune and later deployed with 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, Bravo Company, Weapons Platoon, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit to Iraq. On January 15, 2005, in Anbar Province, Iraq, Sgt. Patterson was killed by an improvised explosive device while serving in combat. He died a hero, protecting his fellow Marines and defending the freedom he believed in.
At OPFOB, we honor Sgt. Jayton D. Patterson as a devoted husband and father, a man of deep faith, and a Marine whose courage, character, and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Semper Fi.
