In recognition of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Every September, the nation pauses to acknowledge a crisis hiding in plain sight. At OPFOB, we don't just pause… we Light the Fire.

From September 12–19, Operation Patriots FOB will host Light the Fire, a week-long awareness event and living vigil on our 268-acre campus in Ridgeland, South Carolina. From the moment the fire is lit, it will burn 24/7 while manned by veterans, first responders, community members, and supporters who refuse to let this fight go dark.

This year, Light the Fire carries a broader, more urgent message. The fire does not burn for one community alone. It burns for every warrior who has answered the call — our military veterans, our law enforcement officers, our firefighters, EMTs, dispatchers, and the first responders who run toward danger every single day and carry that weight long after the shift ends. The suicide crisis does not discriminate. Neither does our commitment to ending it.

Throughout the week, OPFOB invites veterans, active-duty service members, first responders, and their families to come to the FOB, sit around the fire, share their stories, connect with peers who understand, and find strength in the community that surrounds them. Whether you volunteer to stand watch, sponsor a day on the FOB, or simply show up, your presence is your statement.

The fire reaches its most powerful moment on Saturday, September 19th, when Light the Fire converges with OPFOB's 4th Annual First Responder Appreciation Day. As we honor the men and women who serve our communities, the fire that has burned all week becomes a symbol of something greater. Not just remembrance, but resilience. Not just awareness, but action.

The fire will not go out until we do.

OPFOB is all about healing and building peer-to-peer relationships. We are losing more of our Veteran heroes to suicide than we did in battle. I have seen firsthand the positive impact OPFOB has made on them and their families.”
