US Air Force (Ret.), Vietnam Veteran
Dr. John A. Kelm, PhD
John A. Kelm, PhD, was a founding board member of Operation Patriots FOB, whose life was defined by service, leadership, and a deep commitment to helping others.
John served more than two decades in the United States Air Force, including assignments with the 21st Tactical Air Support Squadron in Vietnam and ultimately as Superintendent of the 351st Operations Group, 510th Strategic Missile Squadron. After retiring from the Air Force, he continued his career in public service as a Senior Criminal Investigator with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
His professional experience also gave him a unique understanding of the challenges faced by those who serve. John earned a PhD in Behavioral Psychology and, for 16 years, served as a mentor in the Milwaukee VA Regional Medical Center’s mental health treatment program, working with veterans experiencing PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. He also taught as an adjunct faculty member at Marquette University and Concordia University, where he taught statistics and criminal psychology.
John brought that wealth of military, law enforcement, academic, and behavioral health experience to OPFOB from its earliest days. As a founding board member, he believed deeply in the importance of camaraderie, purpose, and connection for those who have served.
Beyond OPFOB, John dedicated himself to his community through nonprofit leadership, including serving as President of the Blue Heron Wildlife Sanctuary in Wisconsin.
John’s legacy lives on in the mission he helped build and in the veterans, first responders, and families who continue to find connection and purpose at OPFOB.
